Cars Brands History: The car has known a meteoric evolution for a century and it has become today an everyday object. These developments have intensified in recent years with the arrival of new technologies. The power, comfort and functionality offered are constantly improving to offer products to customers who are always more attractive and in tune with the times. Projects currently underway even aim to manufacture so-called autonomous cars. That is to say cars that drive themselves. There are several kinds with specific features and characteristics. SUV, Sports, Family cars, Luxury cars, Sedans, 4×4, …
While the car was invented in Germany, Europe’s lead was quickly lost. Frenchman Louis Chevrolet’s car was produced in the United States, which also bought England’s Vauxhall, Germany’s Opel, and Sweden’s Saab. Ford, which made an early run through Europe, renaming local companies “Ford,” also recently grabbed Land Rover, Volvo, and Jaguar. Chrysler grabbed Hillman, Humber, Singer, Sunbeam, Talbot, and Simca, merging them before selling them to Peugeot.
German, Italian, and British cars remain known for luxury and performance, with Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and others maintaining a strong reputation despite mechanical issues. Volkswagen and BMW, by focusing on sportiness over cost, made a comeback to become serious players. Mercedes grabbed Chrysler, and Jaguar’s sales rocketed as it switched to lower-cost Ford platforms. Within Europe, Peugeot and Renault are still strong, and England’s Rover is making a comeback. Sweden, unfortunately, no longer owns either of its two car companies – the quirky Saab and the once extra-safe Volvo.
Seemingly from out of nowhere, Asian brands came to the American market, first with underpowered rustbuckets, then with underpowered, efficient, and reliable vehicles. They originally sold at a premium, because they were scarce and, for Americans, unique in their efficiency. Over the years, Japanese cars became better and better in quality, power, and size, until they took over the American market for cars.
As the Japanese Car companies moved upscale, a gap opened at the bottom. Korean automakers happily filled it, starting with the Pontiac LeMans (Daewoo), Ford Aspire (Kia), and Mitsubishi-designed Hyundai Excel. Now, Hyundai and Kia are joined and offer similar vehicles with the best warranties in the business, while Daewoo has been acquired by General Motors in the form of Suzuki. Hyundai has been popping up at the top of quality surveys, though Kia still stays at the bottom. The Korean manufacturers, while they don’t have a massive market share – yet – have come a long way.
