Skoda Auto
Skoda Auto is a Czech manufacturer of automobiles, buses, trucks, and motorcycles. It is the second-largest car brand in Central Europe after Volkswagen Group. The company was founded in 1895 by Václav Klement and Václav Laurin. The company’s first car was produced in 1898. Skoda Auto has been present in more than 100 countries worldwide for over a century.
In 1991, Skoda Auto became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. It refers to both the Skoda passenger car brand and the two autonomous divisions of the group in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Škoda automobilová a.s., for mainstream vehicles; and Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., for high-end supercars.
As of 2018, Skoda’s most successful car in terms of sales has been the Superb model, which has sold more than one million units since its release in 2001. The current range of production cars from Škoda Auto includes superminis (Octavia), compact executive cars (Superb), sports saloons/sedans (Fabia), compact SUVs (Yeti), and crossovers (Karoq, Karoq SW).
Skoda’s name is a word-play on the Czech word “sklad,” meaning “workshop” or “car repair shop.” The company was founded in 1895 when it started manufacturing bicycles. By 1897, it had moved to the town of Mladá Boleslav and employed over 1,000 workers. It produced its first automobile in 1905. During World War II, Skoda was the largest manufacturer of vehicles in the Axis countries after Germany, producing trucks to support the German war effort.
After Czechoslovakia was liberated from German occupation in 1945, Skoda started producing automobiles again. Since then, it has produced more than 10 million cars and 100 million motorcycles under six brand names: Škoda, Karoq, Citigo, Octavia, Superb, and Kodiaq. In the 2010s company’s automotive production consisted of three models only – Škoda Octavia (together with its estate version), Škoda Superb, and Škoda Kodiaq. The first SUV made by the company is Yeti which came into the market in 2015 (it will be redesigned in 2018).
Skoda Auto exports its car manufacturing plants to Iran, Slovakia, and South America. In December 1991, Volkswagen Group acquired a 42.0% voting stake of Skoda Auto, the rest being independent until 1996 when ČEPRO was merged into VWAG by acquiring 75% of its capital stock. In 1994 Mladá Boleslav became the company’s headquarters after Škoda Auto was privatized by selling 25% share to local entrepreneurs. Then in 2001, Volkswagen Group assumed 100% control over the company after buying a majority stake from state-owned Enterprise Europe Network.
Skoda’s logo from the 1910s to 1939 was two arrowheads symbolizing a gear and an arrow. In 1939 it gained a one-headlight face, in accordance with the fashion of the time. In 1997 Skoda adopted its current logo for both the company and the Škoda brand. Designed by Rayaneh Badi’i, it is also colored blue, which reflects an industry trend where car manufacturers use a particular color over a range of vehicles. The previous black cat logo remains in use for some models such as Superb and Superb II.
In the early days, Skoda’s 1.8-litre flat-four air-cooled engines were manufactured at the company’s existing powertrain plant in Mladá Boleslav that subsequently became a part of Škoda Auto. Currently, Skoda Auto has manufacturing plants in Karviná and Kvasiny for car engines. Mladá Boleslav (the company headquarters) and Otrokovice for car bodies. Bratislava, Michalovce and Trnava for final assembly of cars. Hajdúszoboszló and Biatorbágy for steel production. That’s all about Skoda Auto, the famous Czech car brand. In 2005, Iveco Magirus left the IVECO group and began operating as an independent company under the name of Iveco Austria GmbH. The reason for this move was that since 1994, the production output of IVECO Magirus was split into two partially duplicated product ranges: one for firefighting vehicles (IVECO Magirus) and one for Trucks (Iveco Magirus).

Avia Cars
Avia cars are the flagship of the Czech car manufacturer, Beneš and Hajn. Founded in 1919 by Miroslav Hajn and Pavel Beneš, Avia cars are designed for speed, style, and durability. The company was originally called Avia Auto but changed its name to Avia in 1922. Avia cars are now distributed throughout Europe, with their headquarters located in Prague, Czech Republic.
The company’s name, Avia, is an abbreviation of the word “avia,” which can be translated as air or aviation. The original interest was to produce aircraft for the army and transport planes to help supply Czechoslovakian troops fighting in World War I. Soon after starting their collaboration, Hajn and Beneš produced two prototype planes for the Czechoslovakian Army before focusing solely on cars.
The first car ever designed by Miroslav Hajn and Pavel Beneš was called the “BH .”It featured four cylinders with a power output of 22 horsepower with an impressive top speed. It was unveiled in 1920 at the Prague International Motor Show, where it caused quite a stir with its aerodynamic design compared to other cars of that time.
In 1935, the first Avia race took place at the Masaryk Circuit, where a BH came in the first place. In 1936, a new model called the “Avia A 50” was created. A year later, it won first place at the Masaryk Grand Prix. This achievement caught the attention of Joseph Goebbels, who then asked Beneš to help design racing cars for Hitler’s Third Reich government. Beneš designed three racing models: the Avus-Wien I, II, and III. They were used for high-speed rally car races throughout Europe and featured an aerodynamic body made from a combination of steel and aluminum.
In 1953, Avia automobiles were exported to China as part of a trade agreement between Czechoslovakia and China. Two years later, they were exported to Cuba as part of an agreement between Fidel Castro’s revolutionary government and the Soviet Union, where it became one of Cuba’s first political symbols. This model continued on sale until 1978.
The 1960s brought about new models for Avia cars. The “A 70” was introduced in 1963, while the “A 80” was released three years later. This model became popular throughout Europe due to its low price, being more affordable than competing brands such as Peugeot. In 1962, Beneš encountered financial problems with Avia, so he sold his stake of the company to Pavel Kříženecký and František Tománek. Then, in 1964, Halat took full control of the company after buying out Pavel Kříženecký’s shares.

Karosa is a Czech car brand that has been discontinued. The history of this brand started in 1896 when a company named Josef Sodomka from Vysoké Mýto started to manufacture cars under the name SODOMKA. In addition to cars, they also built dump trucks and buses.
In the ’90s, there were many bus companies around the world that had good cooperation with Iveco. It was also true for one Czech company named Karosa Vysoké Mýto. After the takeover, Iveco used the Karosa brand on their buses and trucks (under the name Iveco-Karosa). Now Karosa is only a commercial trademark used on some old models or specific markets.
The last known bus that was made under the original name Karosa was model C 944 T e4x4 (Iveco EuroClass HD). The company is still in business since 2000 it is named Iveco Bus s.r.o. The whole history of the Karosa brand was made by one man Frantisek Vyskočil. He was director between 1966 and 1999 at the same time when Iveco took over the company.
Karosa stopped production of their trucks in 2003 and buses after 2006, but they are still assembling Iveco Eurocargo T e4x2 for the Czech army. In addition to that, they also re-fabricated some old models from the mid-’90s under the name VanStar. Still, in 2013, they are making dump trucks and buses under the name Iveco-Karosa when it comes to special orders, exhibitions, or rallies.

IT is to ensure maximum safety to their customers. The next car brand on our list is Praga, a well-known Czech car company.
Praga
Praga car brand, founded in 1907, is a Czech car company. Praga automobiles are known for their quality engineering and good traction on snowy roads. The company produces cars with a rear-wheel-drive design, an inline-four engine, and manual transmission. The first Praga’s production facilities were located in Prague, the capital of former Czechoslovakia. Between World Wars I and II, Praga produced tractors and trucks for various purposes. In 1945, after WWII, they shifted their focus to producing passenger cars with rear-wheel drive design and inline-four engines.
Praga has an interesting history. It was initially started in 1907 but only produced motor cars for the first few years. In 1911 they did their first car, which was a 4-door sedan of average design. This did not make much money. One year later, in 1912, Praga made their second car.
Praga’s first model was Praga Mignon. This car’s design was the first to feature many of the unique characteristics, among them being its four-wheel-drive system. Years later, this car would be succeeded by several upgraded models which came with advanced engines.
Some other famous models of Praga are Praga Grand which is a Limousine, Praga Alfa, Piccolo, Baby, Super Piccolo, Golden, Lady, etc.
Praga R1R is the first supercar from Praga. The name was said to have been inspired by its design as well as the fact that it was a 1st class car. The engine of this car is a V6-cylinder 4-stroke petrol engine. It has the highest safety clutches than any other sportscar. This engine is capable of producing up to 390 horsepower (291 kW; 395 PS).
Praga has hit the ground running with their first car, as it placed very well at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011. It’s still not sure if they will make any more or not, but it does seem like a good start.
Under the Motorcycles category, Praga has introduced Praga BD 500 DOHC, Praga BC 350 OHC, and Praga R1. Praga R1 debuted at Goodwood in 2009 is one of the world’s most expensive new sportscar.
In the future, Praga motors are thinking about advancing technologies to improve their designs. They are thinking about one day producing an electric car but are not sure if they will produce a hybrid or fully electric vehicle.

Overall, the Czech Republic Auto Industry have definitely established themselves as an industry leader. They became so successful because of the incredible Automotive manufacturers that made them and the many financial backers who understood their potential. While certainly on the rise, many have asserted that this is just the beginning of the country’s potential, which is understandable.
There is no realistic way to tell whether the Czech Republic will succeed, but given the results we have seen so far, we believe they will remain at the top for decades to come. We will continue to give information about different country’s car brands.
Czech car brands are known for affordability and durability. We have tried to include the most well-known as well as those car brands who have stopped production. Maybe we have missed some of them. If you find any Czech car companies which we have missed, then please let us know about it.
